The Lion in Winter James Goldman's historical play is set in the castle of Henry II at Chinon, France in 1183. The aging King Henry has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John. and all want to rule when he's gone. It's Christmas Eve and the plot thickens with the arrival of Philip, King of France. Centered on the love/hate relationship of the King and Queen, it also carries the added dimension of the King's mistress, Alais, Philip's sister.
